Stay Healthy in an Unhealthy World

Welcome to January – the midst of cold and flu season. Reports of H1N1 flu cases are reported daily and masked adults and children can be spotted everywhere. We all know to wash our hands often and steer clear of sick people, but there are other things in your control to stay healthy this winter. Keep reading.

  1. Do Aerobic Exercise Regularly. Regular aerobic activity improves the body's natural virus-killing cells that boost immunity. It also helps rid you of those extra holiday pounds you may have picked up.

  2. Eat yogurt. Some studies have found that eating just 1 cup of low fat yogurt each day can reduce your risk of getting a cold by 25%. Yogurt is also a source of calcium and vitamin D –two nutrients most of us don't get enough of.

  3. Drink more water. Staying hydrated is important to keep the mucous membranes of your nose moist. While this may sound gross, moist membranes are better able to fend off cold producing viruses than dried ones. Water also helps fight fatigue.

  4. Eat more plants. Vitamin C and beta-carotene from fruits and vegetables keep your immune system strong. Don't just pop a vitamin. Enjoy citrus fruits, broccoli, spinach, kale, sweet potatoes and other seasonal produce.

  5. Sleep papa, sleep. Adequate rest is a must to prevent illness. Inadequate sleep has been linked with increased risk for colds and flu, as well as weight gain. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of ZZZs each night.
