Bite This, Not That

What's better to buy and eat; berries or grapes?

Spring is in full bloom and so are the produce aisles at your favorite grocery store. If you're not already eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, this is a great time to start.

But, with the price of some fruit being through the roof, you want to get the most nutritional bang for your buck. When comparing fruit, you really are comparing apples to oranges. So, this spring, what's better to buy and eat; berries or grapes? Berries. Here's why.

  1. Strawberries are lower in calories – containing a skinny 49 calories per cup versus 104 calories per cup in grapes. So you can eat twice as much.

  2. They are a much better source of vitamin C – boasting 149% of the Daily Value, versus a mere 27% for grapes.

  3. They're packed with fiber. Strawberries contain 3 times the fiber in one cup over grapes (3 grams versus 1 gram).

  4. Strawberries are much lower in sugar – which may be beneficial to individuals with diabetes or high triglyceride levels. Grapes contain twice the carbohydrate as strawberries, and over three times the amount of sugar (27 grams versus just 7 grams in strawberries).

  5. They're versatile! Ever hear of a "grape smoothie"? I don't think so! Strawberries can be tossed in yogurt, cereal, a smoothie or salad. Check out our spinach strawberry salad this month if you don't believe us.
